Two Birds One Stone is the kind of café that you immediately feel at ease in. Located away from the hustle and bustle of Chapel St and Toorak Road, TBOS is located down the once inconspicuous Claremont Street in South Yarra. The street then became famous among the inner city crowd when a certain celebrity pastry chef set up shop next door. You might have heard of him, last name starts with Z and he has a thing for croquembouches? While the people may come in hoards for their Zonuts and Zumbaroons, they no doubt take notice of the little café next door brimming with locals and churning out amazing food.

The café accommodates for smaller intimate brunch dates while larger group gatherings are afforded breakfast booths along the back wall. The one large communal table provides the perfect setting for food envy (so take mental notes about what to order next time), as well as an excellent vantage point to check out other people attempting to subtly Instagram their meals .

We really appreciate cafes that offer both their breakfast and lunch menus at all times of the day. It means that there is no discrimination between those wanting to chow down on smashed avocado and eggs and those who want to enjoy a soft shell crab burger or Reuben sandwich at 10am. This is the kind of culinary evolution that we hope comes mercifully soon.

The menu reads like a dream and will no doubt have something for every hungry bruncher. For those looking for a sweeter start to their mornings there are the coconut pancakes with kiwi fruit, mandarin curd, coconut sago, candied pine nuts and maple syrup (which has proved so popular that fans demanded it become a permanent fixtue after originally appearing as a special).

You can also opt for the twice-cooked French toast with banana, chocolate sauce, vanilla anglaise and macadamia nut praline. For a more savoury palate there is of course smashed avo on the menu served with tomato, breakfast radish, chives and an option of marinated feta or a well-known favourite of sautéed mushrooms on brioche with cherry tomatoes, goats cheese, almonds and poached eggs.

Despite the tough competition next door, TBOS also bakes all their sweets and pastries on premises and have quite a display of their delectable morsels in their display cabinet – including their famous cheesecake brownie.

With this South Yarra Street once being synonymous with a pastry chef, it’s about time that the hype switched over to this brunching hot spot. Adriano Who?
