One of the spiritual homes of Melbourne’s independent music scene, particularly experimental rock and punk music, The Old Bar is a short walk from Brunswick Street, and is easily accessible by trams on both Brunswick and Nicholson Streets.

Despite its 175 seat capacity, the walkways and spaces inside the poster-covered walls of the Old Bar are so narrow that the place will seem quite full even when it’s only at quarter capacity, something which only adds to the frenetic, claustrophobic and beer-soaked gigs that take place here.

The Old Bar has a solid selection of craft beers and old favourites on tap but there’s no kitchen to stave off the hunger pangs. People come here to drink and to see bands, clear and simple. There’s no separate band room here either, just a stage, a bar and smokers’ area out the back, making the focus all about the music.

The atmosphere makes The Old Bar a popular haunt for local musicians, even when they aren’t playing there. If you keep up with the local scene at all you may even notice a famous face or two nursing a pint out the back.

Monday nights are free entry and despite the tag ‘Mundane Mondays’, these are usually anything but. Tuesdays are Cheap Kraken Rum night, and other weeknights feature some of the best up-and-comers in Melbourne’s music scene. On weekends you’re likely to catch some of the musical underground’s finest, including sets from many interstate and international acts.

In the winter months the bar also host a popular craft night every Monday called ‘Crotchety Knitwits’, as well as a VHS club screening old cult classics in all their Blockbuster Video glory.
