If you’re familiar with the Italian restaurants that have brought Lygon Street so much well-earned fame then you’ll be well familiar with all the trappings of the Italian dining experience – the red-checkered table clothes, the candles and the faux-vines painted to the inside walls. These staples of the Italian experience have helped shaped what many of us call ‘traditional Italian’. What happens then when you move the traditional Italian vibe into the far-from-traditional surrounds of Melbourne’s north? You’ll find innovators adapting these tropes with the grungy DIY-attitude of Fitzroy and Collingwood and Lazerpig is case in point.

Part electronica bar and part Italian restaurant, Lazerpig still feels like Nonna’s pizza parlour but if Nonna also earned a packet running a nightclub on the side. The ‘traditional’ experience has been revamped with strokes of personality such as the bull skulls draped in fairy lights and a disco ball with lasers. Whilst is sounds overwhelming on paper the final product is a fun and surprisingly cozy pizza experience.

Lazerpig’s focus is squarely on pizzas and while you’ll find some antipasto selections and even a cheeseburger, there is no doubting that pizza is the star here. The dough itself is made from the restaurant’s unique sourdough culture and Tipo 00 flour, then hand-stretched and cooked at over 400 degrees in a wood-fired oven. The result is a soft, puffy pizza with a delicious crust. The toppings are minimal in their complexity, allowing the ingredients and the pizza to shine through. We recommend the prosciutto pizza and the Mary Had A Little Lamb, which comes complete with slow cooked lamb, fior de latte, olives, feta, and lemon.

Lazerpig also happens to be a funky little bar in its own right, with a very well-equipped bar and carefully curated selection of beers, wines and cocktails. You can even get a whole coconut for yourself. The bar adjoins a small dance floor of sorts where you can find an irregular schedule of DJs mashing up anything from electronica to house and hip-hop.

Eau de Vie

Perfectly capturing the theatricality and craft of expert bar-tending that so few bars manage to achieve, it’s no wonder Eau de Vie has thrived as one of the town’s best kept secrets.

Belleville

Like its sister bars, Section 8 and Ferdydurke, Belleville carries an urban, almost grung vibe. Unlike its sisters, it also serves up solid Asian-inspired fare with heaps of flavour.
