Nestled in a cosy little corner of the city, Whitehart Bar, from husband and wife team Stephen Johnson and Sabrina Santucci, is a brand new addition to Melbourne’s nightlife scene. It follows in the tradition of the difficult to find, but difficult to forget, laneway bars the city does so well.

Formerly the site of an outdoor car park, Whitehart is a two-storey open bar built from shipping containers and a recycled steel frame. The aesthetic and atmosphere is an odd one. Heavily industrial, squeezed between heritage buildings, and with a dash of tropical flourishes for good measure. While it doesn’t sound like these things mesh, there’s a surprising harmony between the different elements at play here – including the eye-catching image of a graceful stag, the titular Whitehart, that watches over you and sets the tone for what is essentially half bar, half art installation.

While the bar is just around the corner from Emporium, the relatively secluded location means you can escape the chaotic jumble of Bourke Street Mall for a more relaxed ambience thanks to the resident DJ.

The space will feature a rotating roster of Melbourne’s finest four-wheeled establishments, plus a regular residence from Ironbark BBQ and its smoky barbecue offerings. For drinks there’s a selection of local and imported beers, as well as boutique wine and cocktails.
