An historic northside institution, The Evelyn Hotel is one of the premier watering holes on the famous Brunswick Street strip, which is in Fitzroy (not to be confused with Brunswick Road, which is in Brunswick) and is one of several legendary live music venues in the neighbourhood.

With its weathered brick exterior and its large outdoor seating area located right on the corner of Brunswick and Kerr streets, the Ev (as it’s known to locals) is impossible to miss when walking north along Brunswick Street.

The venue itself is essentially split into two rooms. The first features seating, projector screens and a pool table and faces out onto the aforementioned outdoor area, which is a hub of travellers, musicians and other creative types virtually any day or night of the week. The other room is the famed Evelyn bandroom, which features live music every night of the week and has played host to countless noteworthy Australian and international performers of all kinds of genres.

Arbory opens from 7:30am and runs until late, leaving you enough time to catch the last train home just next door. For the early risers theres an accommodating breakfast menu featuring the likes of rhubarb porridge, banana pancakes and a brekkie burger with chicken sausage, while the afternoon menu offers up a variety of share plates and mains. The diversity of the afternoon menu means there is something for your non-plussed mates, such as the southern fried chicken burger with chipotle and crinkle cut chips, as well as your foodie friends (dare them to order the steak tartare).

Additionally, harking back to a time before Dan Murphy’s and BWS, the Ev features a small bottle shop just next door offering a wide range of local and international wines, spirits and craft beers. You can purchase a bottle of wine from their fridge and ask for it to be handed back to the bar, where they’ll keep it frosty in a bucket for you while you shoot pool.

Inside at the bar they have a broad selection of craft beers and old favourites on tap. This is not the place to come seeking fancy cocktails. They don’t do food either but they encourage patrons to try the myriad food options in the immediate vicinity, looking at you Mr Burger, and otherwise welcome people to bring outside food to the venue.
