Down one of Melbourne’s famous laneways behind a large, unassuming entrance, hides an experience that will take you half a world away. Souk showcases the best of the Middle East and North Africa, fitting in seamlessly with Melbourne’s iconically multicultural foodie scene.

Through the door at the rear of Bligh Place, white stone walls are bathed in pink neon light, echoing Middle Eastern architecture in a way that feels modern and sophisticated. Scattered spaciously across two floors are an assortment of private tables, open bench seats and arrangements for large groups, all converging around an elegant and lively bar in the centre of the room.

Amid the distinguished atmosphere, any potential misgivings about haughtiness are immediately dispelled by the welcoming and attentive hosts and waiters. The same can be said for the bar staff, who gladly whip up tongue-in-cheek cocktails such as the Protein Sheik or Aladdin’s Mistress, and offer expert recommendations from the wine list.

Once seated, the menu reveals a generous choice of unique meze items – which are designed for sharing in a similar style to tapas. Even simple dishes have been imbued with an inspirational twist, such as the chipotle hummus with burnt butter dressing or prawn falafel served on smoked black tahini. The presentation itself is just as eye-catching – a slick of oil here, or a splatter of beetroot hummus there. Artistic flourishes like these fit in well with the graffitied laneway the restaurant has called home.

Mexican-born head chef Rogelio Almanza, who has recently settled in Melbourne after living and working in Mexico, America and Japan, highlights traditional Turkish flavours and allows quality produce to stand on its own merit. One of the most admirable things about the menu is the ability to balance savoury, sweet and spice throughout the dishes, creating a cohesive culinary experience, even in the dessert offerings.

Plenty of dishes cater to vegetarian, gluten-free and other common dietary requirements. The kitchen readily accommodates allergies too.

With a licence until 3am from Thursday to Saturday, there is plenty of time for patrons to sink into their surroundings and enjoy a few extra drinks.
