Acai or smoothie bowl? Golden or Matcha latte? Yoga or Pilates? Almond or coconut milk? These seem to be the crux of life’s decisions for those painfully organic, sugar-free, fitness obsessed, flat stomached super-humans we all stalk on Instagram, wondering if they ever crave a burger or have ever taken an unflattering photo. For some (or most) of us, this lifestyle of constant clean eating, Buddha bowls and chia seeds is incredibly unrealistic; but it’s nice to know that places like Serotonin Dealer in Burnley exist to help steer us onto a cleaner and greener path after a night of too many espresso martinis (or another shame-filled Nutella donut binge).

The eatery is based on a philosophy of Happiness, believing that ultimate Happiness is achieved through the types of food you eat, the exercise you do, and how educated and in tune you are with your body. There is a scientific approach to everything at Serotonin, with all food being largely plant-based to help regulate neurotransmitters and hormone activity to keep your mood and stomach happy.

The Happiness theme is carried through every aspect of the café. From the shiny golden cutlery to the much coveted swinging window seats, and the numerous cinnamon dusted smiles adorning their famous speciality organic lattes. Vibes are good. With coffee being the less-popular choice (boo caffeine), their signature hot beverage is their Golden Latte which is a house-made blend of turmeric, ginger, cinnamon and black pepper spun with almond milk and is meant to boost all round good health.

The food is all vegetarian and is able to be customised to any kind of dietary requirements. Popular choices include the standard health-food menu item – the smoothie bowl – Serotonin’s is made of ripe bananas, a secret house-made organic cocoa concoction, coffee beans and mixed fruits. Other favourites include the ‘Nutrition Bomb’ which is basically a rainbow bowl of everything that’s good for you (poached egg, broccoli, alkalising greens, sprouts, hummus and vegies). We honestly feel healthier just reading the menu. For those wanting something a bit naughtier (wait, that’s not even possible because even their pancakes are healthy) their ‘Positive Pancakes’ made of banana flour and served with home-made banana ice-cream provide the ultimate good-bad choice.

Before you leave, make sure to check out the sweets on offer. Their selection of vegan desserts are seriously impressive and definitely should be tried before any judgement is drawn. Special mentions are deserved for their Top Deck and Caramel Dream – we challenge anyone to tell us these aren’t delicious.

Is Serotonin Dealer for everyone? Probably not, but they have a strong philosophy and vision and are creating food that fits into the ‘happy healthy’ plan. We think what they are trying to do is pretty exciting and no doubt guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
