In case you haven’t heard or haven’t stepped outside in a while – it’s winter and it’s cold. As Melbournians you would think we would have acclimatised to the colder conditions by now, but every year winter hits like a big unexpected snow ball to the face. So with the mercury falling, we are all looking for some comfort food to lift our spirits and fill the void of summer days that seem like a distant memory. The best way to do this? Cheese. Lots of cheese. And Wine. Feeling better already, aren’t you?

For any cheese lover, Milk the Cow in St Kilda is definitely the place to be. With over 150 local and imported cheeses and a whole lot of wine knowledge to help match each cheese morsel to its perfect alcoholic partner, Milk the Cow is the ideal location to settle in and give into those deep dauphinoise cravings.

Their St Kilda outpost is located on Fitzroy Street among a throng of fine eateries (Luxemburg, Araliya, Circa), making Milk the Cow a popular choice for pre or post dinner, so make sure you time your visit accordingly if you’re planning on avoiding any waiting time (reservations can only be made for 6 or more people).

The menu is pretty simple and yet there are endless possibilities. If your main focus is solely on the cheese then the Cheesemongers boards is the perfect option. You select the number of cheeses (and tell your waiter about any preferences) and they will put together a variety of cheeses for you to feast on along with your standard cheesing accompaniments of quince paste, freshly baked bread and house made lavosh.

For those looking to indulge in something a bit more booze orientated, there are a selection of ‘flights’ that allow you to select your alcoholic beverage of choice and have the professionals set you up with a range of cheeses to match your drinks. With almost every table adorned with their signature paddle of wines and cheeses, this is definitely the most popular choice on the menu.

To step up the indulgence factor, Milk the Cow also offer their famous fondues. Bubbling pots of rich gooey goodness, their fondues are the ultimate sharing meal to warm the cockles of your heart. If liquid cheese isn’t quite cutting it for you, they also do a baked camembert (drool) and a classic mac’n’cheese with truffle oil which has zero resemblance to the ghastly yellow Cheesy Mac you might be used to.

The service is also incredible. All the staff are super knowledgeable about their produce and every cheese is explained in superb detail. The best part is, once you’ve found your soul mate of cheeses, you are able to buy it and take it home to continue the experience so you never have to part ways ever again.
