First it was macarons, then it was cupcakes. Now, it’s donuts. Melbournians are obsessed, and we’re damn well proud of it. FYI: we’re not talking about your standard Melbourne Show hot cinnamon variety (although there will always be something special about those ones). We’re talking about a new type of donut – the kind you’ll find at the simply-named Donut Shop Donuts and Coffee,

Recognising a serious donut shortage in Fitzroy, Lydia Wegner and Pat Breen (also behind Shop Ramen on Smith Street) decided to save the day and open a hole-in-the-wall shop on Fitzroy’s trendy Gertrude Street. A few short weeks down the track their donuts are all Melbourne can talk about and you’ll find their freshly glazed treats doing rounds across Instagram.

The shop is tiny but features an awesome fluorescent donut/coffee light feature on one of the walls, with three racks of freshly made donuts across from it. Plus there’s a coffee machine with Small Batch beans. Perfect. On the racks you’ll find favourite flavour combinations you’d expect, and some new additions you wouldn’t, such as milk and honey, chocolate and sea salt, coffee and hazelnut crunch, and on-trend matcha and white chocolate, just to name a few. Some are filled but most are the traditional sort Homer would devour in droves. There are always 2-3 filled ones on offer depending on the day and at least one vegan option. Today there are two: a double yuzu combination of yuzu and raspberry, and yuzu and blueberry. Just when you thought things couldn’t get better – they do shakes too. Their peanut butter one is the bomb.

The tiny treats lining the cabinet are pumped out from a kitchen twice the size of the main café. Pastry chef Rowie, a close friend of Wegner, gets into the shop at around 5am every morning, allowing enough time to ensure the first batch will be ready by 8am when the doors open. Rowie then makes another batch to be ready by midday so that there will be fresh donuts no matter what time you visit. Rowie and her helpers make about 160 donuts each weekday, and a whopping 250 on Saturdays and Sundays. The recipe is “closely guarded”.

Bill, the friendly bearded man behind the counter, explains that people tend to select “simpler” donuts in the morning – say milk and honey or cinnamon spice – and “crazier” ones in the afternoon, when people are in desperate need of a sugared pick-me-up. The sugar cravings don’t seem to discriminate however, a quick scan of the room reveals suited men eating pina colada brulees (filled with coconut cream), an elderly couple sharing a cinnamon spice donut to accompany their flat whites, and a young couple taking one of each flavour home in a box. Bill’s favourite? Coffee and hazelnut – though there have been days where he’s had more than one. “It’s all about quality control,” he says.

If you’re new to the donut craze, or a long-term donut devotee, Fitroy’s Donut Shop Donuts and Coffee is the new premier donut destination. Hint: try the pina colada brulee – your world may never be the same.
