The newest venture from Algerian-born chef Pierre Khodja, the restaurant takes its name from the Algerian-French philosopher Albert Camus, whose work explored the challenges of national identity.

Growing up Algerian in Marseille, Khodja has had similar experiences exploring identity, and it seems Camus is the manifestation of that journey. An ode to his homeland, Khodja’s heritage is represented through every dish of soul-food that appears on the table, with many of the simple, minimalist dishes inspired by his mother.

The end result is a menu full of comforting, well-priced dishes with some quirky twists, such as Algerian seafood paella, ras el hanout marinated chicken with olives, saffron and preserved lemon, and Turkish delight soufflé.

Having trained at Michelin-starred restaurants in Paris and London, Camus demonstrates how Khodja has combined his top tier culinary training with the vibrancy of North Africa, creating a unique amalgamation of flavours different from other headliners in the Melbourne dining scene.

Camus is open for dinner Wed-Sun, 6:30pm till late, and Fri-Sun noon-3pm , with the bar kicking on till late.
