The South Yarra end of Chapel Street was once known as a strictly shopping haven, times are a-changing as more and more cafés and brunching hotspot impose their way among the throng of retail outlets. AMBA is the newest kid on the block, located almost directly opposite the Jam Factory you can’t miss the blinged out golden signage and front window of sweet treats delivered daily from Cocoa Patisserie in Kew.

The space combines a mix of stripped woods with metallic gold accents, which stands out from the laid back Nordic vibes from Lucky Penny just a few doors down. Everywhere you’ll find little details revealing flashes of personality, such as tiny ladybugs hidden between succulents or even Totoro riding a palm tree umbrella. It’s been a labour of love for the owners who have spent 14 months decking out the venue ahead of its opening in early January.

Coffee is serious business here at AMBA; Seven Seeds provides the beans monthly to ensure premium freshness and the locals are already loving it, with takeaway coffees sales soaring in their opening weeks (this may also have to do with the fact you get a complimentary daily baked mini muffin with each takeaway coffee!) Not a coffee drinker? No worries. With Mörk hot chocolate and Prana Chai on hand, no-one should feel left out. While the warmer weather is still hanging around, we also highly recommend you stop by for a caramel iced coffee made with real caramel sauce from Burch & Purchese just up the road. Swoon.

Chef Daniel has created a menu that pays tribute to the brunching classics while giving them his own personal new twist. Popular items include the Crunchy French Toast which sees slices of brioche coated in cornflakes and served with grilled peaches, vanilla honey labna and vanilla Persian fairy floss and the Open Bagel topped with shaved fennel, roquette, beetroot cured salmon, poached eggs and the most delicious little morsels of crumbed avocado with horseradish cream. The menu has amble Gluten Free options and will also be changed to seasonally to reflect the availability of fresh produce.

For private dining functions, AMBA has a classy private room upstairs complete with chandeliers and vintage fireplace. With our love of alfresco dining knowing no abounds, AMBA also has an outdoor courtyard out the back – perfect for soaking up the sunshine on a lazy Sunday morning.
